Chapter 1: Secure a Domain Name

Page 1: Research and Purchase a Domain Name

Note: Registering for web hosting services and a domain name usually requires making a purchase online. If you are not comfortable with making online purchases consider working with a consulting company or someone with online-purchasing experience that you can trust. Always protect your personal information including usernames and passwords from others unless they have provided a formal contract for Webmaster services.

The very first thing needed is a domain name. The catch here is that many domain names are already taken. Write down as many variations of a domain name that could work. Generally, shorter is better. Also, domain names that are very easy to remember and spell are also desirable. Characters such as hyphens or others symbols in a domain name are not recommended.

Table 1 shows a sample customer domain name search provided by RealTourNet. First we find out what the business name is or will be. Then we go to a domain name registrar to search for and purchase the desired domain name.

If you decide on a domain that is available, go ahead and register the domain. It's inexpensive, around $10-15. The entire domain name discovery and registration process takes about 1-2 hours.

RealTourNet Service: What we offer at this step is expertise in domain name research. We register the domain name. We send all correspondence for records and the domain name is owned by the client. We are listed as technical administrators to help speed the process of domain name administration.

If you want to know more about ICANN and Domain Names: Notice: ICANN Requirements Notification
You agree that for each domain name registered by You the following information will be made publicly available in the Whois directory as determined by ICANN Policy and may be sold in bulk as set forth in the ICANN agreement: The domain name, Your name and postal address, The email address, postal address, voice and fax numbers for technical and administrative contacts, The Internet protocol numbers for the primary and secondary name servers, The corresponding names of the name servers, The original date of registration and expiration date. http://www.icann.org/index.html

What is ICANN?
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a technical coordination body for the Internet. Created in October 1998 by a broad coalition of the Internet's business, technical, academic, and user communities, ICANN is assuming responsibility for a set of technical functions previously performed under U.S. government contract by IANA and other groups. Specifically, ICANN coordinates the assignment of the following identifiers that must be globally unique for the Internet to function: Internet domain names, IP address numbers, protocol parameter and port numbers. In addition, ICANN coordinates the stable operation of the Internet's root server system. As a non-profit, private-sector corporation, ICANN is dedicated to preserving the operational stability of the Internet; to promoting competition; to achieving broad representation of global Internet communities; and to developing policy through private-sector, bottom-up, consensus-based means. ICANN welcomes the participation of any interested Internet user, business, or organization. http://www.icann.org/index.html
