Page 7: Switch Name Servers

Name Servers control how a domain name is resolved. Another way of saying it is that Name Servers define the location to where a domain name points when a URL (http:www.yoursite.com) is typed in a browser.

So if a domain name is purchased from a Domain Name Retailer such as GoDaddy.com and your hosting server is with RTN Web Hosting, then you will need do this process. In short, change the Name Servers at the Domain Name Retailer to point to your web hosting server.

These are the general necessary steps to switch name servers. More than likely one can administer this process on their own but get familiar with the Domain Name Retailer interface and how to find a "servers' Server- Names". Also, if you register your domain name at the same company of your hosting company, you will not need to do this process.

  1. Find out the hosting server names. There are usually two of them and they are in this format below

    YNS1.YAHOO.COM
    YNS2.YAHOO.COM

  2. Login to your Domain Name Retailer Administration area.
  3. Locate the place where the Name Servers can be edited or changed
  4. Enter the Name Servers of the hosting company.
  5. Submit or save the entries.
  6. Wait up to 24 hours.
  7. The domain name will now be directed to the appropriate hosting company and that's it.

Changes to Name Servers may take up to 24 hours to propagate through the Internet.
